This choral reading session will explore a wide variety of selections for all levels from Endeavor, Gentry, and Walton. From elementary through college, accompanied and unaccompanied, mixed, treble, and tenor-bass, there will be something for everyone. Join us for this special evening session to discover new music and to enjoy singing with your Missouri colleagues and friends!

This session will focus on the role of introverts in the choral program. We will discuss the value “quiet” students bring to the classroom, examine our unintentional bias towards extroverts, and learn how to create a safe space for the introverted singer. We will also explore the challenge of being an introverted teacher and how to find solitude in the cacophony of the music classroom.

The Community Folk Dance is an opportunity for elementary educators to get together in a social setting to dance some known dances, and learn some new ones with other like-minded teachers who appreciate the art of dance and movement in the general music setting. Our caller this year is Dr. Rob Amchin, Master Orff educator and presenter. This event was so enjoyable last year, we have decided to make this a yearly event in place of a keynote address. No special skills are needed to participate--just come ready to move and have a good time!

Drum Corps have been honing their pedagogy and procedures for decades, and these can produce repeatable, undeniable quality without undue stress. The ideas these instructors rely on are simple and can be applied to any ensemble, and any wind instrument, at any age, with infinite variation. This presentation discusses basic procedures and musical pedagogy DCI instructors rely on and demonstrates exercises to enhance the clarity of your group while giving greater agency to your students over their rehearsal and playing.

More and more published works are incorporating "world percussion" into instrumental part
writing. Often, these parts are skeletal representations of a rhythm, and lack helpful context
or direction. Sometimes, these parts even contradict with the musical practices of the
culture they are purporting to represent.
This clinic will examine how we can use the written parts, program notes, and even the title
of the piece to determine a more appropriate, and culturally informed approach to
performance.

A timely update regarding the MSHSAA and Music Activities across the state. Including information on the Prescribed Graded Music List, Festival Participation, Governance, Concerns, and Solutions. If you are an active middle, junior, and/or high school music director this is an excellent session to learn about the association and its support of music education and participation.

Develop lesson plans that incorporate movement with music to get some pep in their steps!

This session will focus on how to get you, your choir, your accompanist, and your instrumentalists to groove. Attendees will get hands-on experience practicing and conducting funky rhythms and learn how to integrate them into rehearsal. Rhythm examples will be available to take home. (Geared towards middle school and above but open to all.)

As choral directors, we are always exploring ways to recruit and retain singers in school choral ensembles. In this interactive session, the clinician will share strategies to build and grow a choral program in the following areas: 1) exploring program structure to meet the needs of the community/school; 2) identifying and connecting with prospective singers; and 3) creating engaging musical experiences that encourage singer retention.

Always running out of time to assess theory or sight-reading? Do you spend too much time reminding students of pitch letters, or how to identify solfege syllables? This session demonstrates how to integrate basic theory (solfege, pitch-rhythm, intervals, major/minor key signatures, aural audiation and rhythmic dictation) without losing entire class periods to theory review. Create smarter, stronger musicians by utilizing this process of daily theory! Ways to quickly assess and provide feedback for student sight-reading and repertoire are also discussed.

The Missouri Arts Education Data Project (MOAEDP) compiles data from MO public schools about Fine Arts, including performing ensembles and general music classes. from the state department of education for comparative analysis and transforms it into publicly available interactive dashboards. recently launched for the first time in the fall of 2024, the information will be updated annually to reflect the true status of arts education and support discussions about access, programming, and opportunities for students in MO public schools.

Getting into a groove for all music teachers. In this session, participants will use world drumming to explore elasticity within music, learn about a variety of world rhythms, and find ways to help students groove.

Designed to empower K-12 music educators with practical strategies for navigating the complexities of the K-12 classroom, this clinic will provide valuable insights into balancing the demands of teaching K-12 while fostering a vibrant music program.

Building a program is difficult, regardless of the school size. This session will give educators strategies for effectively building relationships with all stakeholders within a school community.

The Jazz Reading Session is a great opportunity for directors to play through a variety of arrangements of all levels, both new charts and the 'tried and true'. Bring your instrument and join us! Or just come and listen! There's sure to be a tune or two that will fit your program's needs.

A short warmup session every day can lead to meaningful improvement over time for any ensemble, and jazz groups are no exception. We will look at ways to target various musical aspects including style, articulation, rhythm, time feel, intonation, balance, listening around the ensemble, and improvisation.

How to create, integrate, and train a team of students to serve as a new section of the band that deals entirely with the technology component of the activity. Questions related to program wide benefits, how to recruit members, training options, scope of responsibility, etc. will be addressed within the clinic. Examples and student success stories will also be discussed within the session.

We will explore what it means to perform music with technology and examine options for teaching it in the classroom. It will include examples from recent courses.

The Missouri Chapter of the American String Teachers Association will host our annual busniess luncheon. Annual awards will be presented and prizes will be raffled to MoASTA members in attendance.

The workshop will focus on creating an early childhood music and movement environment which stimulates and fosters the child’s innate musical abilities, cognitive, social, language, creative, and motor development. Participants will actively explore songs, rhymes, singing games, finger plays, and a multitude of other musical activities that provide a variety of developmentally appropriate musical experiences for the young child. Current research dealing with learning theory, early vocal production and song acquisition will be discussed. Participants will develop musical and pedagogical competencies to awaken and enrich the child’s life-long interest and JOY for music and learning.

This session will focus on ways elementary educators can take control of their time by giving tips and tricks for being better organized. It will also focus on handling classroom management struggles in the elementary music classroom. These two issues are often directly linked to one another; when the teacher is unprepared it shows in the way their classroom is run. The goal of this session is to help everyone be more successful in their day to day practices. This sessions would be especially helpful for the beginning music educator.

It’s time to prove that music is for everyone! Using technology and creativity we can increase critical thinking in the music classroom. There are so many paths we can take in music. In this session, we will get honest with our assumptions about music and learn to grow. It is time to show our students non-performance music opportunities that could grow into a passion. This is the answer to the time-old student statement, “I’ll never use this in real life!”
