This session will focus on strategies and structure of a high school guitar program. We will tackle topics of the first year of guitar from warm-ups to improvisation and everything in-between.

Composition and improvisation for children has too often been seen as difficult, and therefore not tried, because of preconceived notions of what it means to compose and improvise in the classical music tradition. These notions that have stymied our attempts will be erased as we compose and improvise and play with music throughout this workshop while making connections to how these activities can work easily in the music classrooms. Issues of notation, assessment and technology will also be addressed.
