MMEA 72nd Annual In-Service Workshop/Conference

Welcome to our new MMEA website! As you can see, the site has a totally new look, and should prove to be much more user friendly.

Planning for this transition began over a year ago. After much discussion, we decided to seek a company to administer our website that could offer more timely information to our members, support online registrations, easily accept changes and updated information, and, above all, be user friendly. That company proved to be Caledon Virtual in Columbia.

Foremost among the desired improvements was the ability to disseminate information to MMEA members quickly. That need was especially evident when questions arose regarding the weather and last year’s conference. This new site will allow us to quickly post information about weather, meetings, issues in state government, DESE updates, and many other important and timely issues.

Music---It’s Core!

“If we are to fulfill the call issued by the President and Secretary of Education to ensure that the United State is the gold standard for curriculum and student achievement, we must first ensure that all students have access to a robust, effective arts education. Today’s NAEP [National Assessment of Educational Progress] results demonstrate the importance of arts education in our schools, and the significant work we must undertake to ensure that all students have access to this vital instruction.” Those words came from R.

MIOSM and MMEA - Just Imagine ...

As I write this article, schools across Missouri are completing activities in celebration and recognition of Music In Our Schools Month. Unfortunately, many schools do not take time to showcase their music programs, underscore the importance of music in students’ lives, and make the general public, administrators, Boards of Education, and parents aware of the benefits of music instruction by qualified music educators.

Due to the deadline for the submission of articles for the Missouri School Music magazine, this article is being written prior to our 71st annual MMEA In-Service Workshop/Conference. So, as we anticipate that event, reality suggests it is already time to look forward to the 2010 conference.

As MMEA’s newly elected Board of Directors members, District Presidents, and newly appointed Advisory Council members begin their duties, each faces a lengthy list of established responsibilities for his/her position, as well as deadlines for submission of articles, reports, and forms. These people also bring fresh ideas and great enthusiasm to our organization. So, I thought this might be a good time to inform you of some of these happenings.

"Where has the summer gone?"

How many times have you heard that lately? Hopefully, you’ve all been able to enjoy the time, and are looking forward to the upcoming school year.

One Last Time

The 70th annual in-service is now but a distant memory. All of us are now focused on our students, incorporating some of the new ideas and strategies that were acquired at various workshops and clinics. It is important that during the mid-winter months we keep our focus and continue to work diligently in order to reap the benefits of a successful spring concert, contest or festival.
